Interview with Arcadia:
Innovation and Passion for the Disbudded Chrysanthemum

Arcadia specialises in the cultivation of more than 30 varieties of disbudded chrysanthemums, focusing on unique and distinctive breeds that the market demands. We aim to remain the central source for disbudded Chrysanthemums by continually innovating and introducing 3 to 4 new varieties each year. With 26 hectares spread across four locations and 120 employees, we produce 60 million stems annually, 50% of which are white. Our core values are quality and reliability, ensuring year-round production.

Why did you choose this particular flower?

For me, the disbudded Chrysanthemum is the perfect flower due to its strength, versatility, and distinctive character. I take pride in gifting a bouquet of disbudded Chrysanthemums for a birthday, as they always make a statement with their size and elegance. This flower is a real eye-catcher in bouquets and offers florists countless possibilities due to its wide range of colours. Chrysanthemums allow us to continuously innovate and deliver unique products that consistently surprise the market.

How do you ensure sustainability in the growing process?

Sustainability is central to Arcadia’s operations. We are making significant progress with LED lighting and have connected several locations to geothermal energy. Every year, we place more emphasis on biological crop protection, and we have installed insect netting to keep pests out, reducing the need for chemical treatments.

What would you like florists to know about your product?

The disbudded Chrysanthemum is a fantastic filler for bouquets, thanks to its large flower head and sturdy foliage. Additionally, the Chrysanthemum has exceptional durability, even in high temperatures, making it ideal for events and long-lasting arrangements.

What should florists know about your product?

The dusty, outdated image of Chrysanthemums is truly a thing of the past. Thanks to the work of Just Chrys, florists in Europe are once again confident in using Chrysanthemums, and it’s wonderful to see. Chrysanthemums offer a versatile and reliable option for florists.

Do you have any unique cultivation techniques or methods that make your flowers stand out?

Our greenhouses are equipped with the latest technology, including full LED lighting and climate control with dehumidification. This innovation ensures that we can deliver top-quality chrysanthemums year-round. Our modern processing techniques minimise leaf breakage and ensure a perfect presentation.

"This innovation ensures that we can deliver top-quality chrysanthemums year-round."

What are the key factors that influence the quality and quantity of the harvest?

The correct timing of the harvest is crucial. Harvesting too late can cause damage to the flowers, while harvesting too early can hinder growth. The flowers need to be quickly processed and cooled to extend their shelf life. Using buckets during transport helps keep the flowers firm, which is important for an attractive presentation in Cash & Carry shops.

What inspired you to become a grower?

The challenge of turning a small plant into something beautiful within 10 weeks was incredibly inspiring to me. The competitive aspect of producing something just a bit more beautiful than the competition has always been a driving force. The industry has changed dramatically, and I enjoy playing a key role in the modern Chrysanthemum cultivation sector.

How many flowers do you produce annually?

Across our four locations, we produce approximately 60 million Chrysanthemum stems each year. We are committed to continuously improving our production processes and sustainability practices to maintain our leading position in the market.

to keep up with new varieties and trends. Our flexibility and open communication enable us to quickly adjust to meet demand.
