Nursery C. van Wijk: Generations of Craftsmanship in Green Santini
In the dynamic world of floriculture, it takes true skill not just to keep up, but to lead the way. Nursery C. van Wijk proves that craftsmanship, innovation, and sustainability can go hand in hand. This family-run business has specialized for years in growing the green Santini ‘Country’ and knows exactly what it takes to bring a high-quality product to market.
A Family Business with a Vision for the Future
Kees van Wijk, the youngest of four brothers, took over the company from his father and has continued the family tradition ever since. Today, his three sons are also involved in the business, one of them full-time. “My mission is to pass on a successful company to the next generation,” Kees explains. The focus lies not only on continuity, but also on innovation and quality.
From a Broad Color Palette to Green Santini
Originally, the nursery grew a wide range of spray chrysanthemums. However, demand for green Santinis increased to such an extent that Kwekerij C. van Wijk decided to fully focus on this niche. 'Growing the green Country variety requires a specific approach and cannot easily be combined with other Santinis due to differences in reaction times and climate requirements,' Kees explains.

Why the ‘Country’ Variety?
Among the Santinis, Nursery C. van Wijk has chosen the ‘Country’ variety. This type stands out with its open spray structure, making it blend beautifully into bouquets. “Moreover, Country often lasts the longest in mixed arrangements and retains its color from day 1 to day 10. That makes this variety truly unique,” says Kees.
Tips for florists
For florists working with Country, Kees offers an important tip: “Always store the flowers in a cool place for the best vase life.” In addition, Country is easy to work with, making it perfect for creative floral designs.
Sustainability as a Key Priority
Sustainability plays an increasingly important role in floriculture, and Nursery C. van Wijk actively embraces it. This is important not only for the environment but also for the eco-conscious florist looking to make responsible choices. Some of the steps the nursery has taken include:
Efficient defoliation: By removing 15 cm of leaves from the 55 cm stems, unnecessary volume and weight during transport is reduced. This also simplifies waste separation and avoids green waste in plastic.
Full LED lighting: Since 2022, the nursery has switched to energy-efficient, dimmable and color-adjustable LED lighting. This also reduces unnecessary evaporation, which helps save water.
Active dehumidification: This not only results in a better product with stronger sprays and healthier leaves, but also contributes to more efficient climate control in the greenhouse.
Solar panels: The entire processing hall is equipped with solar panels to generate electricity for the business, while also keeping the space cooler.

Quality, Sustainability, and Craftsmanship
With a strong focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation, Nursery C. van Wijk sets itself apart in the market. For florists, wholesalers, and exporters looking for a reliable and high-quality green Santini, Country is an excellent choice. With this family business at the helm, the future of Country is guaranteed to stay vibrantly green!

Challenges for the Future
Like many other growers, Nursery C. van Wijk faces future challenges. “Automation is becoming increasingly important, especially due to the shortage of skilled labor,” says Kees. Additionally, a potential energy tax poses a risk to production costs. Nevertheless, the family business remains determined to adapt and continue investing in a sustainable and efficient future.
